Wedding Day Bliss Factors: One Way to Avoid Becoming a Bridezilla

MMydress n' dazzle wedding outfit Mom just reminded me how for my seventh birthday all I wanted was a Dress ‘N Dazzle wedding set to play in. The day we went to pick it out, Toys ‘R Us was having a power outage and I thought for a few miserable moments that I wouldn’t get to be a bride for my birthday. But we were able to go into the store with a sales person who had a flash light and the crisis was averted. That was probably one of the best birthday presents I got as a kid. It came with a dress, veil, bouquet, ring, and I even got the white sparkly high heels that were extra. Everything a girl could need for a wedding. I used to put that outfit on, make my sister be my bridesmaid, and have my Mom sing “Here Comes the Bride” as I walked down the “aisle” created by the couches in our family room.

Every bride is different but I have dreamed about my wedding day at least since I was seven. Of course my tastes have changed just the slightest bit, but what I dreamed 20+ years ago plays a huge role in what I still envision today. And what I envision today plays into what defines a successful wedding for my fiancé and me.

In project management every project must have success criteria that all those involved in the project (project manager and stakeholders – more on these roles in later posts) agree on. Once the success criteria is hashed out the project manager is able to focus on the activities that are most important to the project’s success.  For a wedding, I see the success criteria (I’m going to call it wedding day bliss factors) as not only what will make the day/event successful but also what is most important to all parties involved.

For Justin (my fiancé) and me, a lot of what is important to us revolves around throwing a wedding that everyone will enjoy. In addition, I have a couple wedding day bliss factors of my own. They include looking amazing in my wedding dress and not becoming a bridezilla. When I asked Justin what his personal items were he said just one thing, that we are both happy. Can I get a big “awwwwwww”? I feel quite self-indulged now. But he is right, when it comes down to it the most important thing about our wedding is that we are happy and that we are starting the rest of our lives together. I don’t know if I could think of anything more important than that.

Of course, wedding day bliss factors aren’t going to be the same for everyone.  But it could be one of the most important things you do while planning your wedding because if you type them up, print them out, and hang them up somewhere you won’t ever be able to let nasty bridezilla take over. That bridezilla will never come out because all you have to do is look at your list and it will keep you grounded. And maybe it will even save you some quarrels with your fiancé too.

      Dad,

A bridezilla is a bride that turns into a crazy person anytime before the wedding or the day of. There may be yelling at people, unreasonable requests, etc.

Thanks for the very nice goal.

I love this page! My baby girl was actually only 6 years old and was a flower girl along with her sister at my friend Nic’s wedding. It gave Laurel all kinds of ideas.

My wish for you and Justin is to have a wonderful year planning the wedding, and a great party weekend at the wedding. Strive for happiness and not perfection and you will NOT become a brideszilla.(ahhh sounds a bit Confusious)

PS Laird – funniest question I’ve heard ‘What is a bridezilla’? My definition is a bride that only thinks about herself and her own needs AND expects perfection. A dangerouse combo but that is not our Laurel

Thanks Mom. And I am glad that you think I don’t have the characteristics to become a bridezilla.

I didn’t say you didnt have the characteristcs to become a bridezilla – everyone has that – I meant to say you were conducting yourself in a way that would preclude bad behavior. That is more important than characteristics as it is your own effort and desire.
